Book Review: Wind power by Josepha Sherman
Wind power was first used to push sailboats and people start using windmill to pump water 4,000 years ago. Historians know around A.D. 600 the Persians, present-day Iran, used windmills to grind their grain into flour. In the late A.D. 1800s people started to use wind machines to generate electricity for lights and machines. In 1888, Charles F. Brush was the first person to make electricity available for others’ home. in 1931 Russia built the first commercial power plant that used a wind turbine to make electricity, and it made 100 kilowatts of electricity, by 1941 a *Vermont company had made a 1,250-kilowatt wind turbine when laid end to end the two blades measured 175 feet (53 meters), it worked until 1945, because one of the blades broke and fell off.
Today wind power is the fastest-growing renewable energy source, and did you know that Denmark gets 20 percent of it's electricity from wind power? And Taiwan is also very suitable for off shore wind power generation. And lots of Denmark engineers are now living in Taiwan to help develop the wind power. Even though most people use wind power to generate electricity. Some people still use windmills to pump water, and to sail boats.
*Its a company in Vermont
Overall I think its a was an excellent book because, it show me a lot about the history of wind power. It also has pictures specifically explain what is in the wind turbine. They also tell me who made the biggest turbine and how a turbine works. Where is the best place to build a wind turbine. And now I know that the gears and generator of a wind turbine is inside a compartment big enough for people to walk in it! And do you know the length of the wind turbine blades from end to end, is longer than the length of a football field.
After World War ll ( 1939–1945 ), people used fossil fuels instead of wind energy. But it was not good for the environment and I hope that we can stop using fossil fuels and start using wind energy, hydro power and solar energy. Even though fossil fuels are way cheaper and more reliable, however if we can use all the green energy together. We can help save the earth from air pollution and the green house effect.
This is the end of my book report, thanks for reading! Hope you have a great day!
